2011, VHR Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Price: 1.100,00 DKK

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as impressive as it was when I tasted it six months ago. Tar, smoke, melted road tar and black fruit all come to life in this powerful, brooding wine. For the first time, the Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet includes a dollop of Petit Verdot, which gives the wine a little more backbone and gravitas, both of which were quite useful in 2011. This super-impressive showing is also shaping up to be one of the most promising wines of the year. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.

2013, VHR Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Price: 1.500,00 DKK

Majestic and towering in personality, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly great wines of a great vintage. The flavors are bold, intense and driving, with huge swaths of tannins and layers of pulsating minerality in support. Graphite, leather, lavender, tobacco and spices wrap around the virile, imposing finish. A wine of vertical structure and stunning detail, the 2013 is going to need the better part of the next decade to start opening up. Today, it is impressive, but it will be even better in a few years' time.

A slightly higher production of 775 cases was made with the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a prodigious Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, with notes of creosote, camphor and burning embers, which give it an almost Graves-like character, but then the rich, creamy, pure blackberry and cassis fruit kick in. The wine has fabulous intensity, a multi-layered, dense, full-bodied texture and terrific finish. The tannins are slightly more dominant than in the 2012, but they offer sweetness and creaminess as opposed to any astringency or harshness, This is a modern-day classic from Vine Hill Ranch and probably the finest wine they have ever made. Drink it over the next 30+ years.

Vine Hill Ranch's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is magnificent. A wine of regal purity and finesse, the 2014 exudes pedigree from the very first taste. Then again, this is one of the finest sites in all of Napa Valley. The flavors are bright and precise, while the wine retains considerable freshness. Dark cherry jam, spice, rose petal and leather are some of the many notes that take shape as the 2014 continues to open up in the glass. Powerful and dense, the 2014 is a super-classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that will drink well for 20-30 years, perhaps more. In two tastings several weeks apart, the 2014 showed beautifully. In a word: magnificent!

2015, VHR Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon Price: 1.600,00 DKK

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is gorgeous. Above all else, I am impressed with how much freshness the 2015 shows. Racy red cherry, plum, rose petal and lavender notes fill out the wine's sumptuous frame. Bottled just a few months ago, the 2015 is a bit reticent, but it is nevertheless impressive. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural radiance.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with cedar notions over a cassis, warm blackberries and black cherries core with hints of spice box, garrigue and bay leaves. Full-bodied, firm and grainy with nice vibrant fruit expression, it has lots of oak at this youthful but that should marry nicely with a further 3-4 years in bottle.

“Vine Hill Ranch’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is flat-out epic. Look for the 2016 VHR to be one of the benchmark wines of this great Napa Valley vintage. A year ago, the 2016 was powerful and dramatic. Today, the 2016 is super-polished and regal in bearing. Vertical and deep, with tremendous complexity, the 2016 has so much to offer. A rush of black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice, sage, dark spice and earthy notes build as this statuesque Cabernet Sauvignon shows off its magnificent pedigree. The 2016 is a monumental, towering wine. That’s all there is to it.”

“I have said it before, but it bears repeating. One of the most remarkable things about Vine Hill Ranch is the component wines that aren’t bottled here. One taste of those wines is enough to understand the quality of what goes into the final blend.”
Wine of the Year Honourable Mention, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, Dec 2018

“The 2016 Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is a drop dead stunning wine from the Phillips and their talented team of Mike Wolf and Françoise Peschon. This majestic Cabernet bursts opens to seductive aromas of dark currants, blueberries, spices, graphite, iron, violets and a touch of sage all emerging from the glass. On the palate this is equally as impressive, as it boasts a gorgeous full body that shows incredible depth, with a resonating core or ripe dark fruits that expands beautifully through the long polished finish. This is one of the most compelling wines from this fabulous vintage, and readers should not hesitate to get their hands on this years exceptional release from VHR. 2022-2046.”

“Sporting a saturated purple colour, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon VHR is a total blockbuster that spent 21 months in French oak. It knocks it out of the park with its Pauillac-like bouquet of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, damp earth, lead pencil shavings, and cedar wood. Hitting the palate with a massive texture and full body, it’s a powerful, full throttle effort that has remarkable balance, ripe tannins, and an opulent, sexy texture that’s a joy to drink. Despite its flamboyant style, it’s perfectly balanced and is a sensational wine. Feel free to drink it any time over the coming 20-25 years. Bravo!”
