Our superb 2010 Lia Viognier was described by customers, critics and trade members alike as the finest Californian example they’d ever tasted. Luckily the 2011 follow up is of similar style and quality, although sadly of much lower production due to the low yields of the vintage. It’s a beautiful wine with great varietal expression and the acid structure to match its natural richness. As a variety Viognier should be rich, sometimes viscous and always intense. This does not mean, however, that it should be soft, blowsy and heavy. In our cool coastal climate we can achieve the breathtaking intensity for which it’s known, but still retain enough acidity for the wine to be long, precise and focused on the palate. We blocked the malolactic fermentation in two of the three source vineyards to retain some ‘greener’ more savory elements that malic acid can bring – ‘the connection to the vine’. You can drink this on release for its exuberant fruit or age it for three or four years to concentrate the fruit core further still and bring even greater deliciousness.
Brilliant pale straw color. Explosively aromatic: spring blossoms, fresh cut grass, honeysuckle, apricot, lemon sherbet and lilies. Wave upon wave of luscious fruit and breezy savory notes cascade on the palate: orange marmalade, white peach, baked apple – all tangy and delicious. Hints of lanolin, quince richness and honey develop. Fresh saline oyster shell notes and tense bright acidity provide balance to the persistent focused finish. Best consumed within four years of release.

The most obviously rich and Californian-styled of our 2012 Chardonnay bottlings, our latest Chloe release is a strong follow up to the stellar 2011 bottling and another great wine in this long line of vintages stretching back to 2000. As our warmest Chardonnay site, it’s only correct that this should be our deepest wine and the designate Chardonnay to drink first – for its dramatic opulence and flavor impact. Sometimes too much of a good thing is just enough after all. What’s important though is that richness and texture need not automatically come at the expense of vibrancy or freshness, and this wine holds true to that. There’s always a strong sense of dynamic energy and flickering acidity to the wine that prevents it becoming heavy or too concentrated and unbalanced. There’s a great deal of old vine concentration and layered depth here but it’s intrinsically a finely-tuned pulsating, shimmering wine.
Aromatically fruit-forward with ripe peach, cantaloupe, lemon curd and orange marmalade. Floral lilies, toasted almonds and fennel complexity. Underlying savory cut grass character mixes with richer nectar and pollen notes. Fruit dominant palate – tangy citrus marmalade, quite oily and viscous but always vibrant. Nectarine richness but offset by sea spray and olive elements. Evolves nicely in the glass. Firms up and lengthens. Floral notes run throughout the wine, apple blossom and iodine, quinine complexity. Good bright acidity to finish. Drink between 2014 and 2019.

The 2015 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard delivers incredibly evocative notes of lemon zest, grapefruit, yuzu and lime leaves with touches of baking bread, marzipan, ginger and white blossoms. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is super fresh and minerally with a satiny texture and loads of citrus and savory layers, finishing long and perfumed.

 The 2015 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard is another steely, concentrated, almost austere wine from the estate that’s going to demand cellaring. Dried herbs, citrus, white flowers, and salty minerality give way to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, backward Chardonnay that has awesome potential, yet needs another year of bottle age.

Beautifully fragrant, aromatic Pinot: cranberry, pomegranate, fresh raspberry and classic black cherry. Licorice, rose petal, thyme and graphite complexity, freshly-turned earth. Sweet fruit entry, broad rich and tactile but remains lively and supple. Rhubarb compote, darker cassis, baked plum — deep layered intensity. Subtle red-apple-skin tannins and lingering anise perfume. Persistent resonating finish. Drink between late-2017 and 2024.
Slightly brighter and livelier than its show-stopping 2014 predecessor, the wine offers lovely depth of flavor and balanced concentration, all wrapped up in a brilliantly vibrant attention-grabbing package. I love how the aromatic purity carries fully through to the palate — intense, focused and detailed.
As with all our Pinots from the vintage, there's a real fruit compote character and natural density to the wine — layered, succulent and deep. A complex loamy-woodsy note adds extra sweetness and depth. The fresh acidity makes the wine stand upright: poised, punchy and youthfully dynamic. Stylistically, it's a classic Green Valley hillside site-driven wine, quite distinct from the warmer parts of the Russian River Valley, and filled with soulful nuance. I expect this will age beautifully in bottle, so no hurry to drink it; give it some time to unfold through 2017 and beyond.

This is without question our most improved individual bottling and a wonderful follow up to the delicious 2012 that won many converts to coastal Syrah. By harvesting the vineyard at slightly lower grape maturity and adding a substantial portion of whole clusters to the fermentation, we are really seeing the special character and great potential of this mature vineyard shine like never before. The wine is incredibly complex aromatically with lovely interplay between its fruit purity and the wilder, more savory side of Syrah. The palate gives a swirling, constantly-changing layered impression with ripe wild berry fruit typical of sandy soil vineyards and the savory, complex herbal notes that these old clones and whole cluster fermentation provide. A dash of Viognier in the fermenter kicks up the aromatic detail adding fruit succulence and an airy floral edge. I really like the way the wine expands impressively towards its finish, building subtly to a crescendo of blue, black and purple fruits with plum skin and dark olive tapenade complexity. One of the wines of the vintage.

A myriad of fragrant layered aromas, fresh and breezy but always a darker brooding edge. Kaleidoscopic palate – briary fruit, spicy tapenade notes, inner mouth lilac perfume, wild sage and woodsy complexity. Texture builds alongside prominent structure. Ripe fruit absorbs the wine’s firmness. Finishes layered, long and savory. Decant in its youth and drink between 2016 and 2023.

There’s a very strong terroir element to our 2013 Eddie’s Patch Syrah – it’s foremost a wine of site rather than Californian sunshine. It shows a prominent iron-like, ferrous/mineral element that is extremely complex and appealing and quite evocative of these deep red, eroded upland soils. At the same time though it’s quite fine-boned with pinpoint detail and clarity of aroma and flavor. A wine of complementary contrasts – bright and lively yet dark in character, supple mid-palate but firmly structured, lovely balance between richness and length – quite a linear wine. The wine dances along the palate and has poise and elegance despite its inherent power. The youthful structure is front and center at the moment so a long decant is best. The wine becomes penetrating and intense as it opens up in the glass with all manner of complex secondary flavors – black tea, cocoa, grilled meat and lavender but always with a vibrant energetic edge, never heavy or clumsy.
Brilliant purple color in the glass. Hi-toned aromatics combine overt fruit with strong savory notes. Blue and black fruits – ripe and lush, graphite and minerals, bay leaf, white and black pepper, strong iron-like quality. Lovely fruit purity, focused, precise long flavors, lots of detail. Deep plum and cherry fruit but always zesty and mouthwatering. Rising acidity and good tannin definition. Decant in its youth and drink between mid-2016 and 2025.

Opaque dark purple color. Deep, pure, dark aromas: cassis, blackberry and plum. Intensely floral with savory complexity: sage, pine needle, cedar and sweet tobacco. Beautifully integrated wine, layered and textured with a long sleek flavor delivery along the entire arc of the palate. Ripe blue and black fruits, building density, sweet chewy tannins with mineral freshness on the lively supple finish. Lingering licorice, floral gravelly lift. Demonstrating the gorgeous purity that is the hallmark of this elegant vintage, our 2014 Napa Cabernet fits perfectly into the DuMOL stylistic playbook. It’s a blend of two special vineyards that complement each other effortlessly. Ballard, planted in iron-rich red volcanic soils at 1,800 feet atop Spring Mountain, is dense and chewy with complex earth and herb aromas, dark black fruits and prominent structure. Rewa, planted on shallow rocky white volcanic ash in the cool Coombsville district, is exotically floral, richly textured with layered suppleness. A beautifully seamless combination. The wine is lavishly aromatic – simultaneously exotic and complex – and these characters never fade, even after three days from a partial bottle. The wine’s weight and density build gradually as it opens in the glass so that rich layers of blackberry jam fruit take hold and absorb the wine’s solid structure. But at all times the wine retains its cool climate mineral streak – dark, fresh and lively with pinpoint focus and livewire intensity. Really delicious.

The wine’s weight and density build gradually as it opens in the glass so that rich layers of blackberry jam fruit take hold and absorb the wine’s solid structure. You can age this for 10+ years and it will continue to put on weight in the bottle, but the nature of the vintage is upfront pleasure, so no need to wait and don’t be afraid to drink on release.
